Rare 1920 Painting by Maynard Dixon Headlines the 2023 Coeur d’Alene Art Auction
Jul 15, 2023 15:00 EDTThis year’s much-anticipated Coeur d’Alene Art Auction will take place on July 15, 2023 and bring over 300 works of fine art to the market. Attendees of the Reno, NV event can consider fresh-to-the-market pieces and a selection of major works by Thomas Moran, Henry Farny, and Maynard Dixon. Leading the catalog is a 1920 painting by Dixon titled The Pony Boy. The artist completed this work while on a sponsored trip to Glacier National Park and the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana. Dixon spent several months among the Blackfeet people, taking photographs and sketches that he later developed into paintings. With The Pony Boy, Dixon departed from his usual impressionistic style to embrace greater realism and clean colors. The painting was part of the artist’s effort to reckon with Modernism and the changing times after World War I.
Thomas Moran’s The Rock of Acoma, New Mexico from 1902 is also on offer. A vibrant watercolor on paper, the work has remained in private hands and beyond public view for decades. Joseph Henry Sharp’s The Young Chief come to auction for the first time in this sale. This 1905 oil painting depicts a tender family scene as viewed from the artist’s studio. Additional works in the catalog include major paintings by Edgar Payne, Eanger Irving Couse, and a more contemporary depiction of a treaty signing by Howard Terpning, from 2008.
