Picasso’s Muse and Warhol’s Mao Among the Highlights in Bonhams’ Prints & Multiples AuctionMar 29, 2022 10:00 PDT
The upcoming Prints and Multiples auction from Bonhams brings together works from Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, Joan Miró, and many others. Pablo Picasso (1881 – 1973) created Jacqueline au Bandeau de Face (Jacqueline With a Headband) in 1962. It is a linocut in colors on Arches paper, signed by Picasso and published by Galerie Louise Leiris, Paris. Jacqueline Roque was the muse and second wife of Picasso. They lived together until his death. She appears in more than 400 portraits by Picasso, including the one available in the upcoming sale. In this work of art, the female head has two facets with two different gazes and expressions; both wear a headband.
A pink-lipped Mao Zedong in a pink suit is an image most cannot forget. An Andy Warhol color screenprint of Mao from 1972 will be available in this Spring Cleaning Un-Curated sale. Mao is printed on Beckett high white paper and signed in pencil by Warhol. Many viewed Mao, the chairman of the Chinese Communist Party, as a tyrant. He was backed and inspired by the communist leaders of Russia like Joseph Stalin. But to Warhol, Mao’s image could be modified, colored, discolored, or parodied to the artist’s liking. Another notable Warhol lot in the auction is as set of six color screenprints titled Grapes, made in 1979. Find the listed items and more on Bonhams and register to place a bid.
