Active from 1960 through 2012, Peter Max used vibrant prints to draw attention to the cultural upheaval of the early 1960s. He often uses a wide range of patterns and colors, as seen in his 1999 acrylic work, titled Roseville Profile. This particular painting is available in Lion and Unicorn’s upcoming Fall Fine Art Auction. Max uses red lines to create a portrait of a woman against a black backdrop. Her hair is adorned with multi-colored flowers.
Karl Springer’s mid-century dining table is another leading work available in the sale. The piece features lacquered shell and bone. Springer’s work is noted for its minimalistic designs. He experimented with several exotic materials such as lacquer, travertine, granite and chromed metals. In the 1960s, the Duchess of Windsor discovered his work and became his first collector. Also on offer is El Nino Del Taco by Diego Rivera, a lithograph that depicts a boy eating a taco beside a dog. It is signed and numbered 23/100.
