Discovered in 1989, paraíba tourmalines are especially prized for their vivid blue colors, which are caused by the presence of copper and manganese. They are named for the Brazilian Paraíba state in which they were first found. The International Gem Society notes that the paraíbas with saturated neon blue shades are the most highly valued of the category.
