Haarlem-born artist Willem Claesz Heda was known to have mastered the still-life genre of painting. Mostly featuring tabletop still-life elements like cheese, fruits, goblets, and bread platters, his signature style was dominated by delicate brushwork and the controlled use of subdued color. An important lot in Sotheby’s upcoming auction of Master Paintings is Heda’s still-life depiction of a pewter kanne, a roemer, an overturned silver beaker resting on a pewter plate, and a ham on another plate, all upon a partially draped table. Dated 1634, the painting is one of many monochrome breakfast pieces created by the artist.
The catalog also features a Simon Vouet painting from 1640. The biblical moment depicted in this Madonna and Child composition is similar to Voeut’s earlier painting from 1633, also titled Madonna and Child. Another piece, titled Penitent Saint Jerome in the Wilderness by Lucas Cranach the Elder and Workshop, is also available. To view the full catalog or place a bid, visit Sotheby’s.
