Paintings by Hank Pitcher and Grant Wood Lead John Moran Auctioneers’ Upcoming Sale
Aug 01, 2023 15:00 EDTLeading the upcoming California Living sale from John Moran Auctioneers is an original oil on canvas painting titled Tandem Surfing #2 by Hank Pitcher. Known for his portrayal of Californian culture and coastal regions, Pitcher is among the most gifted contemporary artists of modern times. Born in Pasadena, California in 1949, he graduated from UCSB’s College of Creative Studies in 1971. His works are included in the collections of the Syracuse Museum of Art at Syracuse University, New York, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. The available lot was painted by Pitcher in 1987. It shows a young woman standing on a man’s shoulder as he rides his surfboard fearlessly.
Another artwork of note in the catalog is Approaching Storm by Grant Wood. The American artist was one of the leading Regionalist painters in the 1930s. Wood’s subject matter often included the rural American Midwest, Iowa cornfields, and mythic topics. His works were incredibly detailed and realistic.
