Paintings by Grafton Tyler Brown and Laverne Nelson Black Highlight Upcoming John Moran Auctioneers Sale

Black American artist Grafton Tyler Brown was best known for his landscape paintings of California and the Pacific Northwest. Born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Brown (1841 – 1918) was also a cartographer and lithographer. He created more than two dozen paintings capturing the beauty of Yellowstone National Park between 1886 and 1891. The recreational area atop a dormant volcano was one of Brown’s favorite subjects. One of his paintings, titled Grand Canyon from Lookout Point, Yellowstone National Park (1886), is a key highlight of this upcoming John Moran Auctioneers event. The painting beautifully illustrates Yellowstone’s signature features, its mountains, canyons, and falls. 

Western Native Americans on Horseback, an oil on board painting by Laverne Nelson Black (1887 – 1938) also leads the listings. Warm colors and broad brushstrokes characterize the artwork. Black’s subject matter often included Native Americans, who fascinated him since childhood. The auction catalog includes a carved bird figure by Karoo Ashevak. Born in 1940 in the Kitimeot, central Arctic region, Ashevak was an Inuk sculptor. His works are incredibly detailed and innovative.
