American visual artist Alice Neel was famous for her portraits depicting acquaintances, strangers, and family. During the late 1960s and early ‘70s, she became an icon of the women’s movement. A watercolor self-portrait by Neel is a key highlight of the upcoming sale from Nye & Co. With her intense use of colors and emotional richness, the artist completed the portrait in an expressionistic style. Neel became famous for her figurative paintings at a time when abstraction was in prominence. In 1979, President Jimmy Carter presented Neel with a National Women’s Caucus for Art award for outstanding achievement.
Another noteworthy artwork in this sale is attributed to René Pierre Charles Princeteau. He was renowned for his horse paintings, hunting scenes, racing images, landscapes, and equestrian portraits. The sale also features a portrait titled Porthole Washington, based on Rembrandt Peale’s works. Peale, an American artist, specialized in French Neoclassical portraits of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Charles Diebold’s oil on canvas titled Maritime Scene is another notable lot. Born in the 19th century, the artist was known for some of his significant coastal-subject works.
