Guy Carleton Wiggins was a landscape painter famous for his artworks featuring New York City winter scenes. The artist learned his craft from his father, Carleton Wiggins, a Barbizon-style artist. He later went on to study under prominent names like William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri. Talking about his first winter painting in 1912, Wiggins told Detroit News, “Things wouldn’t go right [with a summer landscape]… Suddenly I saw what was before me—an elevated railroad track, with a train dashing madly through the whirling blizzard-like snow.” Wiggins’ winter canvases later became a hit. The upcoming Annual New Year’s Auction, offered by Nadeau’s Auction Gallery, features an oil painting by Guy Carleton Wiggins. Titled New York Storm, Columbus Circle, the landscape painting features the snowy streets of New York in Wiggins’ Impressionist style.
Another highlight is a sculpture explaining the 20th-century Black American experience by Elizabeth Catlett. The Family, bronze with brown patina, is an eclectic mix of Catlett’s figurative and abstract styles. Also showcased are crystal chandeliers by Baccarat Crystal, the first French crystal makers. Baccarat Crystal chandeliers are considered ageless and are admired for their unique cut and classic designs.
The event will also offer a Kammer & Reinhardt Emile Berliner gramophone, Rolex and Tiffany timepieces, diamond and platinum jewelry, Victorian furniture, and a selection of carpets. Interested collectors can browse the entire catalog and register to bid online on Bidsquare.
