Nadeau’s Auction Gallery to Offer Morgan Silver Dollars, Franciscan “Indigo” Porcelain Dinnerware Set, and More
Aug 19, 2023 10:00 EDTA set of Three Morgan Silver Dollars is among the highlights of the latest Contemporary and Antique Furnishings, Art and Decorative Accessories sale from Nadeau’s Auction Gallery. Symbolizing the Old West, the Morgan Silver Dollar is a testament to American ingenuity and entrepreneurship. As a result of the controversy surrounding whether the United States economy should be based on a “gold standard” or a gold-silver bimetallic system during the early 19th century, Morgan Silver Dollars were created. Lady Liberty appears on the obverse of the coin in a left-facing close-up portrait. She is surrounded by thirteen stars, representing the thirteen original colonies, and the phrase “E Pluribus Unum” (among many, one). Her headband declares “Liberty,” while she wears the “Phrygian Crown” (as given by ancient Romans to freed slaves), representing freedom of thought. To symbolize the reconciliation between the North and South following the Civil War, cotton and wheat are displayed above the crown. Liberty’s neck is inscribed with a small “M” to honor George T. Morgan, the designer.
Bidders can also consider a 144-piece Franciscan masterpiece collection of porcelain dinnerware in the indigo pattern. Franciscan Ware, which first appeared in 1934 as Franciscan Pottery, was manufactured in Glendale, California by Gladding-McBean and Company. Additional items of interest in this sale include a Mary Lou Higgins signed necklace, a pair of silvered candlestick wall sconces, and a large television cabinet in three parts.
