Millea Bros. Three-Day Sale Features Work by Nikolai Sverchkov, Constantin Meunier, James Rosenquist, and More
Jul 16, 2024 10:00 EDTMillea Bros. Ltd’s upcoming three-day sale will present over 1,000 lots of fine and decorative art items from various New York area estates. Leading the first day of the sale is an oil on canvas painting from Russian artist Nikolai Egorovich Sverchkov. Titled Troika on a Winter Road, the painting evokes the harshness and beauty of winter during the late 1860s or early 1870s. A lifelong horse lover, Sverchkov painted the heads of stallions as well as genre scenes that often depict hunting scenes in frigid steppe landscapes. The offered work depicts a troika, a three-horse harnessed vehicle unique to Russia. Additional lots of interest from the first day of the sale include a bronze plaque by Constantin Emile Meunier. A sculptor and painter, Meunier focused on Belgian miners and metalworkers’ daily lives. Through his work, the artist produced portraits of hardworking people who were proud of their accomplishments. The available lot is a portrait in relief of a miner. It is cast-signed by the artist on the lower right.
The second day of this sale particularly highlights decorative art, such as James Rosenquist’s Tumbleweed, 1970, a color lithograph on black paper. Rosenquist, a key figure in the Pop Art movement, drew inspiration from mass production and commercial art. Subtle narratives and intriguing visuals often characterize his work. Among the top lots on the third day of this event is a set of five lithographs by Robert Morris, a wrought iron Hollywood Regency dinner table, and a collection of pipes and a smoker’s cabinet by Dunhill.
