Florence-based artist Agnolo di Cosimo, also known as Bronzino, was an Italian Mannerist painter. In 1539, the artist was commissioned to work for art decorations for the wedding of Cosimo I de’ Medici and thereafter became the court painter of the family. Bronzino’s portrait of a young man with a quill and a sheet of paper is a key highlight of the upcoming sale from Sotheby’s. The portraiture exudes stylishness combined with a sense of detached pride. Most likely a self-portrait of the artist, the oil on panel measures 30.5 inches by 21.63 inches.
Pieter Brueghel the Younger’s The Wedding Procession is another striking artwork on offer. The composition depicts a peasant’s wedding procession heading to a church, led by bagpipers. The groom stands out with his vibrant red hat, while the bride is dressed in a dark-colored robe and is wearing headgear. In the background is a vista view of greenery and a body of water. John Constable R.A.’s oil on canvas titled Helmingham Dell also leads the catalog. Constable visited Helmingham Dell in 1800 and explored the park, replete with old oak trees. He initially drew a sketch and years later transformed it into this full painting. To view the complete catalog and register to bid online, visit Sotheby’s auction.
