Lone Star Art Auction Features Works of Julian Onderdonk, Edward Curtis, Howard Terpning, and More

Available from Lone Star Art Auction this October is an impressive collection of paintings, prints, drawings, and fine artworks. Leading the catalog is a 1909 painting by American Impressionist Julian Onderdonk, titled Autumn Woods. A San Antonio native, Onderdonk is well known for his paintings of bluebonnets and Southwest landscapes. With his plein-air depictions of the magnificent blue flora, Onderdonk created a distinct subgenre of Texas art. The artist’s works evoke his interpretation of light, movement, and a connection to the land. The available oil on board is signed lower left by the artist and is in good condition.  Also available in the auction is a framed photogravure illustration of Brulé Warriors (The North American Indian, v. III), a 20-volume series of books written and published by Edward S. Curtis. The work is widely considered one of history’s most important accounts of Native American culture. His photographs documented the customs, beliefs, and daily life of Indigenous people. 

A bronze sculpture by American artist Alexander Phimister Proctor, titled Stalking Panther, can also be considered. Having mastered anatomical structures from animal dissections and extensive academic training, Proctor approached wildlife as a scientist and an artist. To create this bronze sculpture, the artist used anatomical references obtained from a shaved cat. Another key contemporary work on offer is American painter and illustrator Howard Terpning’s Nobility, a 1980 mixed media on paper. A popular painter of Native Americans, Terpning often depicts items from his Native artifact collection.
