Johan Jacob Rippen’s Baby Grand Piano and Hans J. Wegner’s Papa Bear Chair with Ottoman Come to Sale with Billings
Jun 29, 2024 13:00 EDTDutch broadcaster and piano manufacturer Johan Jacob Rippen worked in his father’s piano shop during his youth. However, Rippen was keen on building pianos himself. He crafted his first piano in 1937 and designed 50 within three years. His most significant achievement was the Maestro, a piano with strings stretched on a vertical frame. The upcoming auction by Billings will feature a baby grand piano crafted by Rippen. It is made of painted cast aluminum and lacquered pecan. Although smaller in size, it has the sound quality and looks of a grand piano. Baby grand pianos are compact and mostly measure less than 7 feet in length. Paul Evans’ Argente coffee table also leads the listing. It is built with welded, scored, textured, painted aluminum, and slate. The celebrated American furniture designer was inspired by the Brutalist style of sculpted metal furnishings.
Hans J. Wegner’s Papa Bearand Ottoman chair set is another noteworthy lot. The design combines his skillful wood joinery techniques with sleek form. Known as the “Master of Chairs”, Wegner focused on simple and functional exterior. Visit Billings to view the complete catalog and register to bid in the upcoming Summer 2024 Modern Art + Design sale.
