Impressionist Painting by William Lester Stevens and Folk Art Carvings by Elijah Pierce Lead Peterborough Auctions’ Upcoming Sale
Jul 08, 2023 10:00 EDTBorn in Rockport, Massachusetts, William Lester Stevens was an illustrious Impressionist painter. He lived in the seaside town for several years and moved to Conway later. Stevens studied painting initially with Parker Perkins and went on to become a celebrated artist by winning numerous awards. Being the son of a landscape gardener, nature was an important subject in his works. An oil on canvas by Stevens is a key highlight of the upcoming sale from Peterborough Auctions. Titled Summer Farmyard, Conway Massachusetts, it is marked by use of bright colors and patches of heavy impasto. Charles Henry Chapin’s Lake George is another noteworthy landscape oil on canvas. His nature paintings are best known for their dramatic effect, which was characteristic of the 19th-century art.
Elijah Pierce’s folk art sculpture, titled Rhino and Dino, also leads the listings. It depicts a three-horned gray rhinoceros on a green base and a natural wooden-crafted dinosaur. While the rhino is carved with a rhinestone inset eyes, the dinosaur has a pair of faux pearl eyes.
