Impressionism-Inspired Paintings by Guy Rose, Nicolai Fechin Illustrations Lead Bonhams’ Upcoming Sale

California-born artist Guy Rose was a renowned American painter also famous for his association with French Impressionism. In 1888, Rose traveled to Paris to study art at Académie Julian and gained wide recognition. This upcoming auction, offered by Bonhams, will feature one of Rose’s works that combines the French style with his popular California coastline subject. In Lifting Fog, an oil on canvas, Rose casts an introspective mood using a calm palette. Concealing the horizon by denoting misty weather, he keeps the La Jolla caves in focus. Other interesting fine artworks in the catalog include two of Nicolai Fechin’s illustrations. One is titled Portrait of a Native American Young Man and the other is called Monterey Bay Seascape. His bold sea view is marked by the striking use of hues whereas the portrait captures expressive emotions.

The Lights of Broadway by Gerald Harvey Jones also leads the listings. It depicts an inviting scene of a busy rainy street in Manhattan with an overcast background. The portrayal of buildings, pedestrians and streetcars exemplifies the artist’s mastery over the urban streetscape. His illustration of warmly lit ambience is inspired by French boulevard artists.
