The golden age of carousels, between the 1890s and 1920s, saw more than 2,000 carousels hand-carved and painted by the master woodcarvers of America. The Great Depression marked the fall of the carousel market as many of these hand-carved carousels fell into disrepair or were demolished. Interest in the carousel art form again spiked in the 1970s when the lost American carousel pieces were uncovered. Many of these hand-carved animals will be featured in the upcoming Home & Interiors Auction offered by Bonhams. Among them, a 20th-century Daniel Muller sea monster carousel piece with a winged saddle is highlighted. Also presented are examples of early American lots by Philadelphia Toboggan Co.
Along with the carousel items, this auction will include painted and stained glass windows, carpets, and furniture. Featured in the sale is a Haji Jalili Tabriz carpet. Known as one of the best carpet masters of the Tabriz region in Iran, Haji Jalili is known for his distinctive choices in color pallets. He often incorporates lighter colors such as pink, grey, and gold in his designs. Jalili’s other trademark is his use of subdued backgrounds of wheat, ivory, sand, pale rust, terra cotta, and brown.
