Helmuth Stone Gallery Offers WWII American Flag, Ray George Ellis Painting, and Other Rarities

A selection of fine art, Asian antiques, rugs, and pre-Columbian objects will lead the upcoming Lou A. & Barbara B. Pritchett Collection sale from Helmuth Stone Gallery. Leading the catalog is a WWII American Flag lowered on January 2, 1942, the day before the Japanese entered Manila. The available American flag was presented by Tom and Aunty Carter to Louis and Barbara Pritchett on August 21, 1984. Among fine art lots, an oil on canvas painting by American artist Ray George Ellis is particularly notable. While Ellis’ oil and watercolor works are often considered Impressionist with their loose style and vibrant colors, they are also naturalistic and realistic. 

The catalog also includes works from various pre-Columbian cultures. This includes a West Mexico, Colima redware vessel. The piece resembles a canine with a nubbin-like leg at each end and its head resting on its back. The vessel is crafted from redware pottery and has a wide spout opposite a raised head and a horseshoe-shaped body. Bidders can also consider a large Chinese Neolithic painted pottery jar, assorted carved wood polychromed Santos figures, and a Chinese Wucai box with porcelain dragons from the Ming era.
