A little-known fact about classic cuckoo clocks is their lengthy history, dating back to the first century B.C. These automaton clocks have experienced massive changes over the years, particularly when the Chinese merged their intricate craftsmanship with the existing technology. These clocks and many other decorative and fine art items will be available in the upcoming Gallery Auction presented by Michaan’s Auctions.
Work from Charles Joseph Biederman—the self-proclaimed “best-known unknown artist in America”—is also featured in this sale. The inspiration for Biederman’s three-dimensional reliefs was drawn from Russian Constructivism and the De Stijl movement. His colorful Structuralist Relief, Red Wing #32, 1954-1964 is presented in this auction. Also available is a selection of American paintings and landscapes from Fern Coppedge and Ralph Blakelock. A 1958 silkscreen by Wayne Thiebaud entitled the Red Sea is another leading lot.
Designer jewelry from brands such as Cartier, Hermès, and David Yurman will also be available. Diamond and gold items play a prominent role, along with a strand of natural saltwater pearls. Native American and Mexican silver jewelry, fine timepieces, and vintage estate jewelry are also represented. Asian art rounds out the sale, ranging from fine porcelains and cloisonné enamel pieces to carved jade and Japanese woodblocks. Of particular interest is an automated Chinese clock, a wind-up item decorated with a waterfall and a pagoda. Explore the full LiveAuctioneers.
