Frank Stella’s Moby-Dick Etching and Jeff Koons’ Balloon Venus Sculpture Available at Hindman

Hindman’s December Prints & Multiples auction is led by several notable ceramics from Pablo Picasso, as well as a color relief printed etching, aquatint, and engraving from Frank Stella’s groundbreaking Moby-Dick (Domes) series. This ten-year project was Stella’s tribute to Herman Melville’s classic novel and to the Abstract Expressionist artists who preceded him. The available work was executed in 1992 and is numbered 23/23 in pencil. The piece references Chapter 69 of Moby-Dick, in which a whale’s carcass is left at sea to decompose, leaving behind a nasty shock for other seafarers. Stella captures the horror of the moment with dizzying curved lines and a riot of color. 

Additional fine prints and multiples from modern and contemporary American masters will be on offer with Hindman this December. This includes a peaceful lithograph from Wayne Thiebaud. Dated 1990, Bow Ties shows several rows of striped and polka dotted ties in warm-tinted colors.
