Fine Art by Frank von der Lancken, Charles Meryon Available at Rachel Davis Fine Arts

Available from Rachel Davis Fine Arts this February is a wide selection of prints, drawings, and photographs. Leading the upcoming sale is a gouache on board by American artist Frank von der Lancken, titled The Elm. Von der Lancken’s paintings often demonstrate expansive landscape scenes, different perspectives, and temporality. The Elm draws attention to its vertical frame and gouache medium, adding a unique visual quality to the landscape. Von der Lancken was known for his meticulously executed portraits that reflect the old Flemish masters. The artist considered portraying time to be one of the most beautiful elements of landscape painting, consistently capturing how light affects a landscape. 

Another notable lot in this auction is La Pompe Notre-Dame, an etching by French artist Charles Meryon. A Paris municipal decision in 1851 to tear down the water pump on Notre Dame bridge prompted the artist to depict it in this piece the following year. This 1852 etching is one of 22 published by Charles Meryon in three parts from 1852 to 1854. A master of original etching, Charles Meryon created works with extensive detail. The available piece is on chine-collé with the artist’s signature on the lower left. Interested collectors can also consider The Messiah, a colored lithograph by Salvador Dalí, as well as six etchings after Pablo Picasso of Lysistrata by Aristophanes, the only classical literary text illustrated by the famed Cubist.
