Yu Youhan’s take on Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa is a highlight of the upcoming Contemporary Art Asia auction, offered by Christie’s. The acrylic on giclée painting is a modified version of da Vinci’s work, with the addition of a pronounced frown and a hat. As a painter, Yu has been an important figure in China’s Political Pop Art movement.
Works from Ding Yi, Zhan Wang, KAWS, and Walasse Ting are also featured. In 1999, KAWS visited Japan, where he created his first signature Companion. The recurring character’s eyes are crossed out and his shoulders are perpetually slumped. The available 2011 Companion is made entirely of wood. Starting his career as a street graffiti artist, KAWS has since become a key figure in contemporary art. For more information on the above items, visit Christie’s.
