Cates Auction & Realty Co. Offers Francis Grant Print, Eastlake-Style Armchair, and Other Rarities

Cates Auction & Realty Co., Inc.’s upcoming sale offers a wide-ranging catalog of fine European porcelain, classic mid-century glassware, and unique antique decorative arts. Among the top lots is a color print attributed to Francis Grant, engraved by F. Bromley. Titled The Meeting of Her Majesty’s Stag Hounds on Ascot Heath, this colorful mezzotint engraving depicts a large meadow full of noblemen and their dogs in a large hunting scene. Men on horseback, standing, and in carriages wait for the hunt to begin. In the distance, a forest is visible where they plan to hunt. A Scottish portrait painter, Grant painted numerous British aristocratic and public figures. Also available is a framed print of Pierre Auguste Cot’s The Storm, created in 1880. Cot painted unique portraits that gave viewers insights into his subjects. The Storm reflects Romantic and Classical styles of 19th-century French art.  

A selection of antique furniture is available in this auction, including an Eastlake-style embroidered armchair from the late 19th century. The Eastlake design consists of simple lines, light carvings, and geometric shapes, and is often embellished with fine embroidery, popular during the Victorian era. The offered armchair is decorated with intricate floral embroidery on the seat and back. A high back and curved arms complement the turned wooden legs on the casters. Notable among jewelry lots is a pair of jewelry boxes. These include a two-door cream leather-looking jewelry box and a wooden jewelry box with a lift-up lid.
