Carroll Shelby Royal Maroon GT500 to Sell in Indy 2023 Sale by MecumMay 12, 2023 10:00 EDT - May 20, 2023 10:00 EDT
Carroll Shelby’s original GT350 Convertible was uncompromising and victorious in the 1965-66 SCCA competition. Its high performance and reputation define its essence. In 1967, with the release of the second-series Mustang, built with Ford’s FE-Series big-block engine, Shelby took things further by adding the larger Police Interceptor 428 to create the GT500. A 1969 Shelby GT500 Convertible is leading the upcoming Indy 2023 auction from Mecum Auction Company. It is a royal maroon-colored GT500 with a 428 Cobra Jet (CI V-8) engine developed by Rhode Island’s Tasca Ford at the suggestion of Eric Dahlquist, Hot Rod magazine editor. The Cobra Jet was purpose-built to perform and proved itself soon after release at its 1968 NHRA Winter Nationals debut with Al Joniec taking Super Stock Eliminator in the all-Cobra Jet Mustang final round.
The sale will also offer a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS. Refinished in silver and black by Body Work, this Chevrolet had a rotisserie restoration. It has a 540 CI V-8 automatic engine and 700R4 overdrive automatic transmission. It comes with a detailed engine bay with painted inner fenders and smoothed firewall. It was upgraded with Vintage Air Power windows, locks, lock power steering, and brakes. It also comes with original build pictures, documents, and receipts. The automobile auction will be held in Indianapolis starting May 12, 2023. Visit Mecum Auction Company for more information on the upcoming Indy 2023 auction and to place a bid.
