Several works from Californian Impressionist Granville Redmond will be featured in Bonhams’ upcoming auction, Californian, and Western art. Leading the available Redmond pieces is Poppies and Lupine, a 1914 oil painting depicting the rolling wildflower fields of southern California. Redmond lost his hearing and speech before the age of three. However, this challenge did not stop him from achieving commercial success in his lifetime. Other notable landscapes in the sale include John Frost’s San Jacinto Mountain, painted in shades of green and violet, as well as several sweeping Western views from Edgar Payne.
The sale also features works from the early 20th century, tracking the development of notable California art movements. Like a painting of San Jacinto Mountain from John (Jack) Frost. More contemporary lots include Henrietta Berk’s Table still life from the mid-1960s. A member of the Bay Area Figurative Movement, Berk was known for her vivid colors and broad brushstrokes. Thomas Kinkade collectors can consider an oil on Masonite autumn scene from 1982, as well as two paintings of Native American settlements.
