Bonhams to Feature Works by Franz Bischoff, Guy Rose, and Other California Artists

In this upcoming live sale of California & Western Art from Bonhams, various paintings, collectibles, and other works of fine art will cross the auction block. Among the leading lots is an oil on canvas by American artist Franz Albert Bischoff (1864 – 1929). The offered work, titled Roses, shows an arrangement of white and pink blooms in a transparent glass vase. Austrian-born artist Bischoff was famous for his floral still lifes and California landscapes. Often referred to as the ‘King of the Rose Painters’, he was considered one of the finest porcelain artists in America. According to the auction catalog, the framed piece is signed ‘Franz A. Bischoff’ on the lower left and with the title on the reverse.

Also available in this auction is a signed artwork by American Impressionist painter and California resident Guy Rose (1867 – 1925). The offered work, titled The Sea, Laguna, is rendered in blue and white hues depicting the scenic Laguna Beach. A big splash of sea waves crashing against a rocky cliff takes the center focus. The cloudless sky and a sharp horizon line are highlighted as well. Other notable works in the catalog include Joseph Kleitsch’s painting First Street (now Glenneyre) at Legion Street, an oil on canvas by William Ritschel called Purple Tide, and a 1917 bronze sculpture by Anna Vaughn Hyatt Huntington (1876 – 1973).
