Bonhams offers An Oil Painting by California Resident and American Artist Guy Rose in Upcoming California Art AuctionNov 21, 2022 13:00 PST
Bonhams’ California Art auction is comprised primarily of landscape scenes and portraits by American artists such as Guy Rose, and Clarence Hinkle. Guy Rose (1867-1925) was born and raised in Southern California. He was an Impressionist artist known for his scenic landscape paintings. As a prominent artist, farmer, and rancher, the town of Rosemead, California was named after him. Bonhams will offer a painting by Rose, titled Along the San Gabriel Mountains. The framed 1916 oil painting illustrates a scenic view of rolling hills and trees in front of the mountain range, with the artist’s signature at the lower left.
Clarence Hinkle (1880-1960) is another Californian artist represented in the auction. In 1917, he became an instructor at the Los Angeles School of Art and Design. After its closing in 1921, Hinkle began teaching at Chouinard School of Art. Portrait of a Lady by Hinkle depicts a woman with brown hair wearing a black dress with yellow flowers pinned to the front. She is seated with her hands folded and resting on her crossed knees in the painting. Other Californian artists include Alfred R. Mitchell, Francis De Erdely, Franz Arthur Bischoff, and more.
