Billings Presents Johan Rippen Grand Piano, Modernist Furniture This December
Dec 10, 2022 13:00 ESTA grand piano designed in 1962 by renowned Dutch piano maker Johan Rippen leads the upcoming Winter 2022 Modern Art & Design sale by Billings. Born in 1909 at The Hague, Rippen built his first piano at 28. He created conventional pianos and unusual models such as the Maestro or Standing Wing model with strings stretched parallel on a vertical frame. The available grand piano is painted in cast aluminum and manufactured by Rippen Pianofabriek N.V. The appearance and form of this piano reflect mid-century Dutch aesthetics. The piano cover comes in lacquered pecan wood finish.
Additionally, Billings will present an ‘Oasis’ sofa designed by Edward J Wormley in 1952. A prolific furniture designer, Wormley worked for iconic furniture makers such as Drexel and Dunbar. He embraced innovative patterns and mid-century modern designs for furniture items such as dining tables and sofas. The Oasis sofa with dramatic arms is composed of luxurious Velvet mohair fabric and wooden legs. The sale includes an array of modern home décor items like a sculpted bronze dining table by Paul Evans and a multi-coloured kinetic sculpture by Gerhard Nicholson.
