Artworks by American Artists Guy Carleton Wiggins & Robert Henri Lead Fall Fine Art & Antique Auction
Oct 20, 2023 09:00 EDTGuy Carleton Wiggins (American, 1883 – 1962) often painted scenes of New York City. Wiggins was trained by his father Carleton Wiggins, an accomplished American landscape painter. He also learned from veterans like William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri. Wiggins mastered Impressionistic work with a distinctly American technique. At the age of 20, he became the youngest artist to have his artwork shown in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Among his most famous paintings are portrayals of New York City’s snowy streets, landmarks, and towering skyscrapers during winter. Leading the upcoming Fall Fine Art & Antique Auction from Wiederseim Associates, Inc is Wiggins’ oil on canvas of a snow scene in New York City, titled Washington Square. It is a signed painting dated November 3, 1980.
An 1878 oil on wood panel titled Brittany by Robert Henri, Guy Carleton Wiggins’ teacher, is another highlight in the sale. Robert Henri (1865 – 1929) was a founder of the Ashcan School and a member of “The Eight.” Henri received his formal art education in Paris, where he identified strongly with the Impressionists. After returning home, he revolted against American academic art, as reflected by the conservative National Academy of Design. The Ashcan School contributed to American realism, depicting urban life in a Brutalist style. For clock enthusiasts, the sale will offer Augustine Neisser Germantown’s Queen Anne walnut tall case clock, from circa 1750.
