Award-winning illustrator Robert Riggs ran away from home when he was young to join the circus. Best known for showing boxing matches and circus scenes in his giant lithographs, he was particularly passionate about the muscular male form. One of Riggs’ lithographs, titled Little Brown Brother, will be featured in the upcoming Antique & Vintage Quality Prints auction, presented by Artelisted. The lithograph captures a boxing match: the fighter is sitting in one corner as a referee shouts instructions. In the background are spectators watching the ring with interest.
Original Antique Maitres de L’Affiche PL.95 by Theophile Steinlen will also be available. Steinlen was best known for his lithographic posters from the 1890s and his paintings depicting the working class. The present lot shows his daughter drinking milk. Sitting at her feet are his cats, who stare at the girl intently. Additional lots include an antique hand-colored engraving of San Francisco from Rincon Point; a vintage stone lithograph of a table, flower vase, and fruits; and several war engravings.
