Annual Fine Art Auction and Navajo Rug Benefit Sale, Maynard Dixon, Mark Maggiori, Ed…
Jul 09, 2023 13:00 EDTAmerican artist Maynard Dixon specialized in Cubist-Realism and Post-Impressionist styles. Largely a self-taught artist, Dixon was born in 1875 in Fresno, CA. He began drawing by age seven and his first sketches depicted Western landscapes. Farmyard and Cottonwood, an oil on canvas with an original Maynard Dixon frame, leads the upcoming sale from Mark Sublette Medicine Man Gallery. This illustration was rendered by Dixon in 1941. The composition is characterized by bright colors and quick dabs of paint onto the canvas. Olla Carriers Returning from Well, an artwork from another American artist, O. E. Berninghaus, also leads the catalog. Berninghaus’ paintings often featured Native Americans, the American Southwest, and New Mexico.
American painter Ed Mell’s oil on linen work, Storm Strike, is another noteworthy lot. Seven important Navajo weavings are listed as well.
