Andy Warhol’s $ Screenprint and Lê Phổ Paintings Available at Freeman’s | Hindman

The upcoming Modern and Contemporary Art sale from Freeman’s | Hindman will particularly feature items from the collection of Dr. Julian Katz and Dr. Sheila Moriber Katz of Gladwyne, Pennsylvania. Key artists with work in this section of the catalog include Roy Lichtenstein and Hans Hofmann. The latter artist’s Red Faces is particularly striking. This 1945 work by the German-born American painter represents an early gesture toward Abstract Expressionism. Swirls of color are laid over a green and red background. Another key lot in the catalog is a $ screenprint by Andy Warhol. Executed in 1982, this work places nine dollar signs in a grid. During the 1980s, Warhol was interested in the rising obsession with wealth in America and the decade’s shifting economic tides. “By elevating the dollar sign to the status of art object,” the auction house notes in the lot description, “Warhol blurred the lines between cultural and financial value.”

Luminous works by Lê Phổ can also be considered. La Lumière d’Été or Summer Light features one of the artist’s signature outdoor scenes, placing two young women beneath brightly-painted summer leaves. Lê Phổ was also known for his still life depictions of flowers. An example of this part of his oeuvre is available as well. Additional works of interest in the catalog range from an etching and drypoint reinvention of the Minotaur myth by Pablo Picasso to a 1985 Pop Art version of the American flag by Roy Lichtenstein.
