American Gold Eagle and Austrian Philharmonic Gold Coins Come to Sale With Brunk Auctions
Nov 16, 2023 09:00 ESTThe largest gold coin ever produced by the US Mint, the American Gold Eagle, was authorized under the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. Between 1986 and 2021, the reverse design featured a male eagle with an olive branch flying above a nest with a female eagle and her eaglet. A 1998 lot of five such one-ounce coins is a key highlight of the upcoming sale from Brunk Auctions. The obverse design features a full-length figure of Lady Liberty, holding a torch and olive branch, with the Capitol building in the background. Another noteworthy collection is a set of four one-ounce Austrian Philharmonic gold coins. The obverse portrays a pipe organ in the Vienna Musikverein Golden Hall. The reverse illustrates horn, bassoon, harp, and four violins centered on a cello. Both of these designs were created by Thomas Pesendorfer, the chief engraver of the Austrian Mint.
Another noteworthy lot is a set of 20 Carson City Morgan Dollar coins (10 of 1883-CC and 10 of 1884-CC). The Morgan Dollar was the first standard silver dollar minted since the Coinage Act of 1873 came into effect.
