American Art, Including Norman Rockwell Painting, Comes to Auction With Sotheby’s
Nov 22, 2021 16:00 ESTSeveral notable pieces of American art will be featured in Sotheby’s upcoming live auction. Leading the sale is Norman Rockwell’s 1928 oil painting titled The Adventurers. The painting appeared on the cover of The Saturday Evening Post in April of 1928. When he was only 22 years old, Rockwell created his first cover for The Post. Over the span of his decades-long career, he completed 321 cover illustrations. By portraying humorous and idealistic depictions of people’s lives, Rockwell earned wide popularity. He later became one of the most prolific and famous illustrators of the 20th century.
The sale also features work from American artist Maxfield Parrish. He was best known for depicting mythological themes. During his career, Parrish shifted his style from figuration and moved toward landscape painting. In the available piece, the artist captured light by placing several layers of glaze over a tonal underpainting. Also among the 53 available lots are works from Jacob Lawrence and Milton Avery.
