Albert Pinkham Ryder’s Last Load, Chinese Guardian Lion Vase Lead Mid-Winter Antique Sale

Albert Pinkham Ryder (1847 – 1917) wanted to achieve immortality with the square canvas in a box of colors. Ryder was born in a bustling whaling port of Massachusetts during the 19th century. He had an intimate connection with the sea and began painting landscapes in early childhood. Although his family moved to New York where he received formal education in art, he was known to be eccentric in the manner he painted and carried himself. Ryder became a founding member of the Society of American Artists, a loosely organized group whose work did not conform to the academic standards of the day. Last Load, a rare oil painting on mahogany panel by Albert Pinkham Ryder, leads the upcoming Mid-Winter Antique Sale from Wiederseim Associates, Inc. The available painting of a man with a horse-driven loaded cart is signed A.P.R. in the lower right and mounted in an ornate gilt frame. Also included are x-rays of the painting. A pair of rare Chinese hexagonal vases from the 18th century is also among the top lots. Each vase has Chinese guardian lion finials, colorful panels of figures, and birds on a light blue reserve.

Notable among furniture lots in this sale is a rare Pennsylvania German painted dower chest decorated with tulips, signed Barbara Erthmen, 1802. A Dutch marquetry slant lid desk is also available. The piece has a fine marquetry inlaid slant lid. Made in the late 18th century, this piece of furniture stands out with a step-down interior, hidden compartment, scalloped skirt, and flaring French feet.
