19th-Century Fang-Ntumu Reliquary Guardian Figure, African Kwele Mask Lead Sotheby’s Upcoming Auction
May 14, 2024 10:00 EDT - May 21, 2024 10:00 EDTA Fang-Ntumu reliquary figure dating back to the 19th century and a Kwele mask are among the notable African works in this upcoming Sotheby’s auction. The male ancestor statue stands at 45.7 cm high and reflects the style of the Fang-Ntumu people of Northern Gabon. The subject here is in a semi-seated position with a rounded forehead and rectangle mouth. The head is perched on a long and cylindrical neck, while the ears are semi-circular. From the left ear dangles a pendant of three metal rings holding a glazed blue and white faience. According to the auction house, this piece of the sculpture was previously owned by Charles Ratton, Louis Carré, and Olivier Le Corneur.
Another item highlighted in the sale is an African Kwele mask from the Collection of Leinuo Zhang, Milan. This wooden mask from the Kwele tribe of Gabon measures 24.5 inches tall and is hand-carved. Kwele masks are often used during initiation ceremonies and at the end of a mourning period. These masks are mostly painted in white, symbolizing light and clarity. Other notable lots include a snuff container from Eastern South Africa, a Paracas embroidered textile border, and a Maya carved cylindrical vase in Chocholá style.
