Still Out + About 2019 More Must-See Summer Exhibits For Aesthetes

Helen Frankenthaler Prints: Seven Types of Ambiguity at Princeton University Art Museum

Celebrated for her contributions to American Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting, Helen Frankenthaler was a significant voice in the realm of post-war American art. This must-see exhibit explores the role of printmaking in Frankenthaler’s oeuvre, the ascendance of the American Print Renaissance, and the critical consideration of abstraction that arose in the latter half of the twentieth century. Spanning five decades and more than a dozen distinct print-making processes, the exhibition highlights Frankenthaler’s compositional language, collaborations, and working process.

Summer with the Averys at The Bruce Museum in Greenwich, Connecticut

Featuring landscapes, seascapes, figural compositions and rarely seen travel sketchbooks, this exhibition spotlights canonical paintings by Milton Avery presented alongside works created by Avery’s wife Sally and their daughter March.

Summer was a time of heightened creativity for the Averys, who often spent the warmer months visiting the rolling hills and stony coasts of New England. Inspired by these pastoral settings, the family produced oil paintings, watercolors, drawings and prints ranging from the representational to the nearly abstract.

Summer with the Averys provides an opportunity to explore Milton Avery’s works presented within the broader context of his similarly inspired family.

Frank Stella at LACMA

Frank Stella at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art tells the story of Stella’s evolution as an artist, presenting a selection of work spanning his 60 year career from his groundbreaking Black Paintings of the late 1950s to his more recent sculptural works. This temporary exhibit, populated by works from LACMA’s permanent collection, provides visitors a thoughtful examination of an artist famed for pushing the boundaries of Abstract Expressionism, championing the rise of Minimalism, and blurring the distinction between painting and sculpture.
