Edward H. Bohlin Parade Saddle Set

Edward H. Bohlin Parade Saddle Set:

Artist/Designer; Manufacturer: Edward H. Bohlin (Swedish/American, 1895-1980); Hollywood Saddlery Co. (USA)
Marking(s); notes: signed, marking(s)
Materials: tooled leather, sterling silver
Dimensions (H, W, D): saddle (including stirrups): 55″h, 35″h, 18″d
Additional Information: The custom-crafted saddle features finely tooled poppy patterns and silver flower conchos and carries a monogrammed nameplate with initials EEW. The saddle set is complete with bridle and breast collar. Provenance: Private Collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico | Russeck Gallery, Palm Beach, Florida.

Per Russeck Gallery: “Bohlinmade black floral carved parade saddle with matching Bohlin Bridle and Breast Collar. Well maker-marked, this hybrid style includes elements from several Bohlin catalog models particularly the square flower conchos (#458-463) feat red on the “Don Weaver” model. The saddle has a 14″ seat stamped in the leather with the earlier Bohlin cartouche and is fully carved with deep California poppy patterns while sporting heavy gauge, intricately engraved swell caps and a 4 1/2″ high fully silver bound cantle with monogrammed name plate and initials “EEW”. The imposing 22 1/2″ long tapaderos continue the square floral concho theme but have been additionally enhanced with very striking but probably not Bohlinmade sterling plates and swell caps probably to conform to the requirements of Rose paraders whose silver saddle accessories required a certain level of consistency and conformity. These enhancement are further evident in the embellished mountings on the matching breast Collar with silver pyramid-shaped danglers. The matching Bridle is Bohlin maker-marked and appears original including a fine silver overlaid matching stainless half breed bit. Overall very good condition with very minor age cracking. Late 1930s-early 1940s.”

very good, light patina to metal, gently used

“At the start of my career, now more than forty years ago, I made a conscious commitment to the idea of ‘difference.’ There I discovered decoration, fashion and beauty along with sentimentality, empathy and pleasure; forms and values I hold all the more precious for their long exclusion from serious consideration. Ever since then, I’ve aspired to make paintings that express this kind of ‘poetics of minority opinion,’ where the lost and abandoned object can be recovered and recognized for what it is — a genuinely different thing that is therefore interesting and provocative in ways that, for all its authority, the dominant discourse can never be.” – excerpt from Artist Statement, Dec. 2023, foundationforcontemporaryarts.org

Condition
very good except for small, discreet nick to top center right edge, minor corner wear, not examined outside frame (condition of art only; dark paint splatter to top edge of frame)
