A wonderful necklace and earring set comprised of ancient glass and carnelian beads strung with vintage silver beads. The necklace has 10 ancient carnelian beads of barrel, tubular, and rounded shapes, with a large central black and white core-formed glass pendant bead. Vintage silver tubular and seed beads form the rest of the strand and terminate at a modern sterling silver box clasp to make this charming necklace wearable. The earrings are long with 6 and 7 ancient beads strung between 2 vintage silver disc spacer beads. Modern silver-plated hooks make these earrings wearable. The carnelian and black glass beads displayed on both the necklace and the earrings make for a very complimentary jewelry ensemble that could be worn together or separately. Provenance: From a collection in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina; purchased from Capricorn Galleries, Bethesda, Maryland in 1977. Artist Biography: Paul Starrett Sample (1896-1974) began his artistic career after graduating with a degree in architecture from Dartmouth. His paintings were influenced by both Social Realism and American Regionalism, although the former increasingly dominated his works following the Great Depression. From 1926-1938, he served on the faculty for architecture at the University of Southern California; thereupon he accepted a position as Artist in Residence at Dartmouth University, which he held until 1962. In his later career, he fulfilled multiple public art commissions, including a mural for the Environmental Protection Agency titled ‘Montana Horses in High Country,’ completed shortly before his death. Auction Reference: A similar painting was sold at Dallas Auction Gallery in 2013 for $40,625.00 including buyer’s premium.

Vibrant depiction of yellow and pink roses nestled in a decorative blue vase contrasting beautifully against the burnt orange ground. Dufy studied at the l’Ecole des Beaux Arts under his brother, Raoul Dufy, and A.E. Othon Friesz before dropping out of school to study exclusively with his brother. Dufy had also worked for Haviland and received the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts gold medal in 1925 for his work. The painting includes a correspondence email with Jacques Bailly Gallery Paris, France, confirming the work to be an authentic work by Jean Dufy.
