Pedro, Isabel, and Rogelio Hernandez (San Juan de Gracia, Michoacan), molded and modeled clay, featuring fine peak applique, copper oxide glaze, with removable lid, featuring madrigal and leaf motifs, with six large matching lidded cups, supported on hooks, on detached base with identical accents height 40 in. x diameter 24 in. Provenance: The collection of Michael Moss, who traveled for decades throughout the interior of Mexico acquiring fine folk art pieces to bring back to his Fredericksburg, Texas ranch home Pedro Hernandez Carlos runs a workshop in San Jose de Gracia, Michoacan, an area home to the indigenous Purepecha people and their descendants. Working alongside his family, they harvest the clay from the local region, pulverize, and knead it until its ready to work with. Drawing from the natural world, he is known for incorporating motifs such as elote, birds, and agave leaves in his work. In 2008, he co-founded Tsitski Museo Comunitario, located at his home. Exceptional cast bronze edition after James Earle Fraser’s “End of the Trail”, sculpted as a socio-political commentary on the plight of Native Americans in 19th century America. The sculpture represents a weary warrior and his exhausted horse with wind blowing from behind as they approach the edge of the Pacific Coast pushed by settlers. Mounted on a dark grey marble base. Signature on lower right: James Fraser. Title on bronze plaque on base: “End of the Trail.”
