John Frost Impressionist Painting Stars in Bonhams California Art Sale

JOHN FROST

Born in 1890, John Frost often found himself painting the sceneries of Southern California in an Impressionist style. In the 1920s, Frost’s work particularly inclined toward French Impressionism. The artist used wispy brushwork and focused on a soft, pastel palette. A fine example of John Frost’s work from this period will be available in the upcoming California Art sale, presented by Bonhams. The landscape composition shows a balance between light and shadow. It features strokes of lavender, brown, and green.

The auction also highlights Armin Hansen’s oil on board painting titled Men at Sea. In 1913, Hansen moved to Monterey to explore the aesthetics of the city. It was only in 1916 that he started to emphasize Monterey’s fishing culture as his primary subject. The available painting’s lot essay describes the nature of the work: “The men and the sea are both depicted as formidable—his fishermen ‘both serve the sea and make it serve them.’” View the complete listings and register to bid online on Bonhams’ website.

Seminal Roy Lichtenstein Screenprints and Frank Stella Lithographs Come to Auction with Christie’s

ROY LICHTENSTEIN (1923-1997)

American painter Roy Lichtenstein (1923 – 1997) was a founding practitioner of the Pop Art movement. He defined the concepts of the genre with images and techniques lifted from popular culture. Roy Lichtenstein’s Brushstroke (1965), a color screenprint on paper, is a key highlight of this timed Christie’s auction. In this print, the artist parodied abstract art with his unflinching graphic recreation of brushstrokes. Between 1965 and 1966, Lichtenstein produced the noted Brushstrokes series, regarded as a satire of gestural painting styles. Moonscape is another significant screenprint by the artist. Lichtenstein produced it for 11 Pop Artists, Vol 1 in 1965. He used a shimmery plastic material called Rowlux for the first time ever, especially for an editioned work of art. Lichtenstein chanced upon the material at a novelty store and discovered its intriguing properties.

Frank Stella’s lithograph in colors, Star of Persia I (1967) from the Star of Persia series, also leads the listings. Stella is celebrated for his contributions to post-painterly abstraction and Minimalism. During the 1960s, he started using a broader scheme of colors, mostly in straight- or curved-line arrangements. To view the complete catalog and register to bid online, visit Christie’s.
