Fine Rugs NY Offers Carpets From Haji Jalili, Bakhtiari, and More

Antique Hajijalili Rug

Haji Jalili was well-known for his unique approach to weaving rugs. He used soft color palettes and incorporated lighter colors such as pink, gold, and gray into his designs. The upcoming antique rugs auction, presented by Fine Rugs NY, brings a strong example of Haji Jalili’s work. The available carpet has circular motifs surrounded by a navy-black border.

Another highlighted lot is an antique Bakhtiari rug. The Bakhtiari tribe of the Zagros Mountains are known for their deep-toned vintage tribal carpets with bold colors and designs. Although they initially produced only geometric patterns, the Bakhtiari tribespeople gradually drew inspiration from the floral carpets of the Persian cities. This changed the course of the Bakhtiari rug, leading to a distinct stylization. View other lots of interest, including furniture and paintings, and register to bid online on Bidsquare

Sotheby’s to Offer Vintage and Rare Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Wines in Upcoming Sale

La Tâche 2001 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (12 BT)

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) is a winery producing some of the most expensive and rarest vintage wines in the world. Situated in Burgundy, France, its origins trace back to 1232 when the Abbey of Saint-Vivant in Vosne bought 1.8 hectares of the vineyard. The estate changed hands multiple times through the following generations. DRC is now co-owned by Roch and de Villaine families. Several bottles of Romanée Conti 2005 from their flagship vineyard is a key highlight of Sotheby’s Landmark DRC (1990 to 2010) sale this winter. The lot consists of three bottles of vintage wine in an original wooden case (OWC). With a richly concentrated kernel of cassis at its center, the wine has notes of tobacco and licorice. In 1760, Prince Louis François added his title “Conti” to the name after he purchased the vineyard for 8,000 livres.

La Tâche 2001 (OWC, 12 bottles) from the winery’s monopole vineyard also leads the listings. Crafted with fruits from newer vines, La Tâche packs a punch with raspberry and cherry fruit. Its concentrated and strong character is distinct from other DRC wines. The sale also offers two 1990 vintage assortment cases with rarities from the estate’s different vineyards. Every wine bottle has signatures by Henri-Frédéric Roch and Aubert de Villaine printed on it. To view the complete catalog and register to bid online, visit Sotheby’s.

Bonhams Presents History Written and Made by Benjamin Franklin, George S. Patton, and Sir Isaac Newton

PATTON, GEORGE S. 1885-1945

In spring of 1782, when preliminary negotiations of the terms of American independence stalled, Benjamin Franklin wrote a letter to Benjamin Vaughan. The latter was friends with the incoming British Prime Minister Lord Shelburne. In this diplomatic document, which is currently up for bid in Bonhams’ Fine Books and Manuscripts auction, Franklin responds to suggestions that Great Britain retained sovereignty over the United States: “If this be really his [Shelburne’s] Project, our Negociation for Peace will not go very far; the thing is impracticable and impossible, being inconsistent with the Faith we have pledg’d, to say nothing of the general Disposition of our People.” The letter bears Franklin’s signature.

Other documents in the sale include a printed copy of the Constitution of the United States from The Evening Chronicle in 1787, a typed letter from George S. Patton to Morry Luxenberg, the first known printed portrait of George Washington, and more. This auction offers several other historical collectibles as well, such as a bust of Abraham Lincoln by George Edwin Bissell, a 34-star American Flag with the words “The Union Forever” printed on the center white stripe, and Sir Isaac Newton’s “New and Improved Terrestrial Globes.” View any of these lots and register to bid on Bonhams
