Coustou Bronze and Gilded Mantel Clock, Marly Horse

Coustou Bronze and Gilded Mantel Clock, Marly Horse

Coustou Bronze and Gilded Mantel Clock, Marly Horse:

Guillaume Coustou the Elder (1677 – 1746) was a French sculptor known for his work in the Baroque and Louis XIV styles. He served as a royal sculptor for both Louis XIV and Louis XV. In 1735, he became the Director of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. His most famous works are the monumental Carrara marble statues of horses created for the Chateau de Marly, which now have replicas standing in the Place de la Concorde in Paris. These Marly Horses reinvent the theme of the colossal Roman marbles of the Horse Tamers in Rome’s Piazza Quirinale. Commissioned by Louis XV in 1739, they were installed at Marly in 1745 and later moved to the Place de la Concorde after the French Revolution. This mantle clock is an inspired by the statues, in an empire-style clock, decorated with bronze and gilded figure of a young man taming horses. Weight: 17 lbs.
