A Controversial Painting by Revere To Be Presented At Christie’s Auction

Paul Revere started his career as a silversmith. He then became one of the members of the Sons of Liberty, a militant group established in 1765, and often created illustrations. Revere was popular for depicting the Boston Massacre that invited many controversies. This particular work will be offered during The Private Collection of William S. Reese Part One Auction, hosted by Christie’s. According to the lot essay, “Paul Revere’s inflammatory engraving ‘The Bloody Massacre’ was one of the most evocative propaganda pieces printed during the American Revolution.”

Another lot of interest is William Guy Wall’s watercolor painting from circa 1821. In the summer of 1820, William Guy Wall moved near the Hudson River. During this time, the landscape of Hudson served as an inspiration for his paintings and later yielded a series titled Hudson River Portfolio. The available lot shows views of the Hudson, extending from near Luzerne to the view of New York. Explore a range of categories and register to bid online on Christie’s

Bonhams Offers Works from American Artists Including Milton Avery

Milton Avery

“I try to construct a picture in which shapes, spaces, colors, form a set of unique relationships, independent of any subject matter,” said Milton Avery. Avery incorporated American Modernism in many of her paintings. He used abstract forms and bold color to mostly depict the American scene. In the upcoming American Art auction, Bonhams will showcase March with Doves by Avery. The oil on canvas work from circa 1940 depicts a blonde woman surrounded by white doves.

Among several American artworks, the online auction offers Robert Henri’s La Mora. “In La Mora, Henri successfully portrays a real cultural figure whom he felt represented the authentic identity of Spain and is masterfully balanced with realist and romantic notions,” Bonhams pointed out. Henri is recognized as one of the pioneers of Ashcan School of American Painters. The art movement was known for its portrayal of realism of daily life in New York through oil paintings. Rare Works by Expressionist Artists Highlight Dane Fine Art’s Memorial Sale of Modern & Contemporary Art

Neil Welliver Title: Sacred Bull

American-born modern artist Neil Gavin Welliver was known for his landscape paintings inspired by the expansive wilderness around his home in Maine. With landscapes as his core subject matter, Welliver also painted nudes in wooded areas or water pools. Sacred Bull, one such countryside painting by the artist, is a key highlight of the upcoming Memorial Sale of Modern & Contemporary Art from Dane Fine Art. Like some of Welliver’s artworks of the 1960s and ‘70s, this rare oil on canvas depicts female nudes in a landscape. It marks a significant mid-point in Welliver’s creative transition from fanciful and figurative to landscape and realistic art.

Peter Max’s Flower Heart, an acrylic mixed media on canvas, also leads the listings. Passionate about astronomy and the cosmic world, the iconic German-American Pop Expressionist uses bold colors and free brushstrokes to express his psychedelic style. Another noted avant-garde Expressionist, Karel Appel, also employed bright but aggressive brushwork in his painted stone relief Floating Family. The human figure is treated in a riotously abstract fashion. One of the founding members of the CoBrA movement in 1948, Appel was influenced by children’s and folk art.
