Louis Icart Painting and Daum Glassware on Offer With Treasureseeker Auction

Daum Nancy Inkwell with Applied Insects

Louis Icart’s famous Art Deco paintings drew heavily on his experience working in the fashion industry. In the early 20th century, the young Icart moved to Paris for a career in art and illustration. He found luck working on the cutting edge of fashion, which was emerging from centuries of traditional bustles to embrace rising hemlines and flapper sensibilities. A fashionable painting by Louis Icart showing three women in a horse-drawn coach will lead this upcoming sale from Treasureseeker Auction. This 1920s piece comes in its original antique white frame.

Collectors of decorative art and glass items will find a broad selection of Daum pieces in this end-of-summer event. Among the top lots is a Daum inkwell with whimsical insect applications attached. Using a combination of leafy motifs and rich green tones, this inkwell evokes the forest floor. Other key items from the Nancy-based crystal studio include a large cameo glass vase showing a waterside scene, a pair of boudoir lamps, and assorted decorative glass sculptures. Among the offered silver lots, a Buccellati tea service is particularly notable. It comes with a silver teapot, coffee pot, creamer, sugar, and handled tray. Floral Ink and Color Paintings and Liao Dynasty Buddhist Triad Panel Highlight Bonhams’ Chinese Art Sale

A White Marble Panel Of Buddhist Triad

Painter, novelist, and educator Liu Yong is known for his distinct style of combining ancient Chinese techniques with his characteristic expression of pointillism. Graceful Lotus, Fragrant Poetry (2014), a framed and glazed ink and color painting on paper by Liu Yong, is a key highlight of this upcoming Bonhams auction. In this painting, the artist embodies poetry using delicate “boneless” brushstrokes to depict flowers. Another featured Chinese artist, Guan Shanyue, portrays natural scenery in his ink and color Plum Blossoms (1987). This sensitive representation was most likely a result of Guan’s extensive travels across China to observe people and nature.

A 10th or 11th-century white marble panel of the Buddhist Triad belonging to the Liao dynasty also leads the listings. It depicts the Buddha Amitabha carved in high relief. Wearing a loose robe, he is seated in padmasana (lotus posture) with his left hand on his lap and right hand raised. With a tranquil and generous expression on his face, he is flanked by two bodhisattvas standing on lotus plinths. The Buddha and bodhisattvas have a leaf-shaped flaming mandorla behind their heads and a pair of apsaras (female spirits in Buddhist mythology) riding on clouds above. Pierre-Louis-Omer CHARLET (FRENCH, 1809-1882).

Pierre Louis Omer Charlet was a French 19th-century painter who dabbled in allegorical themes of church and history. He became fond of historical themes while studying under Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres and Antoine-Jean Gros at the esteemed Beaux-Arts of Paris. An accomplished painter, Charlet also took part in Salon de Paris, where he earned a medal. Four-Session Sale From Oakridge Auction Gallery Surveys the Finest Chinese Works of Art

Zhang Daqian (Chinese), A Landscape Painting Given To Zhongfu

Oakridge Auction Gallery’s upcoming four-session sale includes hundreds of Asian art lots. The first session shines a spotlight on Chinese paintings and calligraphy. Top lots include landscape paintings by Zhang Daqian and Huang Zhou. A master of forgery, Zhang Daqian got his start by crafting convincing reproductions of ancient masterpieces. Among his most prized paintings are those he distributed to friends and acquaintances as gifts, as these were often personalized for the recipient. The available Zhang Daqian painting was executed in 1952 and given as a gift to Huang Zhongfu. In the work, a lone figure surveys a looming rock formation and waterfall. The available Huang Zhou painting shows two horses in motion, bursting with lively linework.

The second and third sessions of this event particularly feature Chinese ceramics, such as a Chinese blue and white vase from the Chongzhen period of the early 17th century. At this time, the Ming dynasty was coming to an end and imperial kilns were closing in rapid succession. Despite the political turbulence, civilian kilns thrived and created high-quality porcelain items. The available Chongzhen period vase dates back to that period and bears delicate flower decoration. Porcelain collectors can also consider a pair of Chinese blue and white bowls from the Wanli period of the Ming dynasty. Like many porcelain objects produced around this time, these bowls show evidence of global trade and the exchange of cultural imagery; they are covered in Sanskrit script and the word “Buddha” at their centers. Additional lots available in the auction sessions include Chinese huanghuali furniture, jade snuff bottles, Buddhist sculptures, and more. Old Brilliant Cut Diamond Worn by Lady Ezra Leads Noonan’s Upcoming Jewelry and Objects of Vertu Auction

An early 20th century diamond ring

An early-20th-century diamond ring worn by Lady Ezra, also known as Rachel Sassoon Ezra, is coming to Noonans’ Jewellery And Objects Of Vertu auction. The cushion-cut central diamond weighs 3.32 carats and is set within a bow with foliate detailing to the sides. The foliate has single and smaller old brilliant-cut diamonds mounted in platinum. This generational piece is coming to auction for the first time. It was passed down to Lady Ezra from her mother, Flora (Farha) Abraham Sassoon (neé Gubbay). She was the great-granddaughter of David Sassoon, one leader of the Jewish community in Mumbai. The Sassoon family moved from Bagdad to Bombay during the early 18th century, becoming some of the first Baghdadi Jews to settle in India. Flora Sassoon had therefore received the best education of the time and was fluent in six languages. After her husband’s demise, she took over the family business, becoming a successful Jewish Indian businesswoman, scholar, Hebraist, and philanthropist.

A late medieval gold posy ring (circa 1400 – 1500) is another notable lot in the auction. It has a broad flattened cross-section, engraved with black letter inscriptions on both the inner and outer surfaces. The external inscription reads ‘mieu en vou,’ meaning ‘best in you.’ The inscription is decorated with flowers and foliage. The internal inscription read ‘a bon am,’ translating as ‘for good love.’ The words are spaced by stylized foliate sprays, with traces of white enamel. Vintage Murano Glass Palm Tree Lamps From Barovier & Toso Lead Akiba Antiques’ September Sale

Monumental Barovier & Toso Opaline Murano Glass Palm Trees

One of the oldest family-owned businesses in the world, Italian glassmaker Barovier & Toso was founded in 1295. It maintains a long tradition of Murano glassmaking while pioneering new styles and techniques, including craquelé and vetro a ghiaccio, respectively craquelure and “ice” glass. The company has sustained itself by balancing tradition and innovation in the modern world. Akiba Antiques’ upcoming Blast From The Past auction will particularly feature a pair of Barovier & Toso Murano glass floor lamps. Dating back to the 1980s or 90s, these whimsical lamps resemble pale white palm trees. Each electrified lamp rests on a brass foundation.

Another notable lot in the catalog is a possibly ancient bronze Corinthian-type helmet from the Mediterranean region. Designed for the ancient Greek citizen-soldiers known as hoplites, this Corinthian helmet would have provided near-complete protection for the head. However, its design compromised the hoplite’s peripheral vision and hearing, making it most suitable for use in a phalanx battle formation. Beyond antique collectibles, the sale also includes a selection of Chinese porcelain vases, vintage gold jewelry from brands such as Baume & Mercier, and Viennese miniature clocks.
