Henry V (1413-1422), Groat, class A, mm

As the world focuses on England after Queen Elizabeth II, Noonans will present English groats in the upcoming Francis Bartlett Collection Of English Groats auction. This coinage sale starts with a Henry V, class A groat. Henry V, also called Henry of Monmouth, reigned over England and Ireland, eventually winning the Hundred Years’ War against France. He was recognized as the heir and regent of France in 1419. Although his reign was short, Henry’s outstanding military successes made England one of the strongest military powers in Europe. This relic Henry V coin features a cross pattée with a sunken center containing a pellet and emaciated bust. The inscription reads, “henric di gra rex anglie z franc,” meaning “Henry VIII, by the Grace of God King of England and France.” It also features large flowers on the bust and a portrait. Another notable coin in the auction is a posthumous groat of Henry VIII, a descendent of Henry V. It bears a crowned, bearded bust of Henry VIII and the Durham House logo. It features lozenge stops, saltire stops, and crescents in the fork end.

A well-preserved but rare Elizabeth I groat or medalet from 1601 is available in the sale. It is a silver coin with Queen Elizabeth I’s crowned bust wearing a high ruff. On the reverse, it bears a crowned monogram with the divided date. The inscription translates to “a female who conserves or keeps safe.” This auction features the collection of Francis Bartlett, who started collecting coins in his childhood. Billings Presents Peter Alexander Sculpture, Modernist Furniture This September

Peter Alexander, Untitled (Wedge) Sculpture

An untitled wedge sculpture from American artist Peter Alexander leads the upcoming Fall 2022 Modern Art & Design sale from Billings. A leader of the California-based Light and Space movement, Alexander worked extensively with translucent resin to craft sculptures seemingly made of light alone. This style is associated with 1960s and 70s Minimalism for its focus on pure elements and form over meaning. The available wedge sculpture was executed in 1968. Made of cast polyester resin, this sculpture appears to shift from complete lightness at the top to a dark brown near the base.

This sale also includes a selection of vintage furniture items for collectors of mid-century modernism. Other key furniture lots include a lounge chair and ottoman from Charles and Ray Eames, as well as rare floor light sculptures from Isamu Noguchi.

Additionally, Billings will present a corner cabinet from Piero Fornasetti. A prolific and skilled artist, Fornasetti sought to bring art into everyday homes.
