The upcoming World & Ancient Coins Signature Internet Auction presented by Heritage Auctions will feature a collection of over 1,800 rare coins. Available lots include pieces from a private Japanese collection, French francs from a Cape Coral collection, and coins from the EMO Collection Cabinet.
Portraits of gods, goddesses, and renowned heroes were shown prominently in the silver and gold coins produced during the Greek Classical period. Among the key lots featured in the auction is a Macedonian Kingdom coin, dating back to the third or fourth century B.C. Created during the reign of Alexander the Great, it bears the head of Heracles in a lion skin headdress. Zeus is also visible, seated on a backless ornamental throne.
Another highlight of the sale is a coin belonging to the era of Agathocles (317-289 B.C.), the tyrant of Syracuse and king of Sicily. The former city was the hub of numismatic activity during the Classical period. It was in Syracuse that two well-known engravers of the time, Kimon and Euainetos, produced a variety of coin designs, including the piece available in this sale.
