Wedgwood Porcelain Dinnerware and 17th-Century Goddess Statues Highlight Willow Auction House’s Upcoming Sale
Mar 03, 2022 11:00 ESTEstablished in 1759, Wedgwood is a manufacturer of fine china, porcelain, and luxury accessories. The English company began producing porcelain a couple of decades after its inception. Owing to its founder-potter Josiah Wedgwood’s enterprising ideas, its porcelain went on to become the Queen’s favorite. Josiah modified the 18th-century creamware with a refreshing bluish-white tint. The Queen grew so fond of this porcelain that it was soon known as ‘Queens’s ware.’ A 115-piece Wedgwood porcelain dinnerware set, adorned with a cuckoo pattern, is a key highlight of the upcoming Willow Auction House sale. The late 20th/early 21st-century service set includes 35 dinner plates, 13 soup bowls, a sugar and creamer, a gravy boat, and an underplate, among others. Another notable dinnerware lot is a sterling bowl and compote pair by Tiffany. Although compotes were originally used to serve a French dish, they are also valued today for their design and artistry.
A pair of 17th-century gilt wood statues of the goddesses Minerva and Themis also leads the listings. Each statue measures over 30 inches tall. While Themis personifies justice in Greek myths, Minerva is the Roman goddess of wisdom, medicine, and the arts. To view the complete catalog and register to bid online, visit LiveAuctioneers.
