Vogt Auction Galleries Offers Lanier Meaders Face Jug, Victorian Snuff Mull, Rolla Sims Taylor Paintings, and Other Rarities

An eclectic assortment of French, American, and English antiques will lead the upcoming Hunter Family Collection sale from Vogt Auction Galleries. Among the top lots is a face jug by Lanier Meaders. This face jug features clay additions that depict a caricatured face on a vernacular one-gallon jug. Kaolin is used to contrast white teeth and eyes. Meaders’ mission over the years has been to preserve the ceramic tradition of Mossy Creek, Georgia. Another notable lot in the catalog is a Victorian snuff mull with silver mounted accents. The available piece resembles a ram’s head, and it comes with three coasters and two compartments covered in silver gilt. 

Among fine art lots in the catalog, an oil on Masonite work by Rolla Sims Taylor titled Guadalupe River, N. B. is particularly notable. During his artistic career, Taylor painted many San Antonio scenes, including buildings along the river, old houses, and missions. Paintings of San Antonio buildings no longer in existence comprise the majority of the artist’s work. In Taylor’s paintings, color and sunlight flood the canvas in a vibrant, Impressionist style. Bidders can consider other works by Rolla Sims Taylor, as well as a Louis XVI-style enfilade/sideboard and a pair of early European-style drinking horns.
