Vintage Decorative Arts After Sir Alfred Gilbert and Gian Lorenzo Bernini Highlight Hindman’s Upcoming SaleApr 13, 2023 10:00 EDT
Sir Alfred Gilbert was an English sculptor whose celebrated landmark, Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain in London, features a surmounted winged statue. While the statue is popularly known as Eros, it was actually created to portray the Greek god’s brother, Anteros. A sculpture based on this significant work is a key highlight of the upcoming sale at Hindman. Titled Eros, the aluminum on bronze scroll figurine was cast by Morris Singer Art Founders. Signed and numbered “FAS George Mancini 9/10,” it also has a foundry mark on a planted foot. Another noteworthy sculpture based on Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s work is a bronze figure of Louis XIV on horseback. Cast by Marinelli Foundry in Florence, the 20th-century piece is signed “Fuse Marinelli / Firenze.” Bernini was brought to France to design a new façade of the Louvre, a portrait bust, and an equestrian statue.
A Régence-styled gilt bronze mounted mahogany, kingwood, and tulipwood grand piano also leads the catalog. The late-19th-century piece was crafted by Paris-based piano maker, Gaveau. The Régence period marked a shift from straight-lined forms to those hinting the Rococo style. Visit Hindman to view the complete catalog and register to bid in the upcoming European Furniture & Decorative Arts sale.
